If you’re new to guitar playing it is a good idea to become familiar with the names of the parts of the guitar and particularly to know the names of the guitar strings. This will be particularly useful when learning to play pieces, either with a guitar tutor like me, a friend or on the internet, and when reading guitar tablature or standard notation.

Notice that there are two E strings. One called ‘Low E’ because it is lower in pitch and one called ‘High E’ because it is higher in pitch.

Guitars can be tuned in many different ways but the above system is what most guitarists use and is called ‘standard tuning’.
