ABOUT GUITAR LESSONS WITH ME

Experienced teacher

I’m recognised by the RGT@LCM as an ‘experienced’ teacher because I have put many students throughout exams and achieved a very high pass rate.

I have over 20 years experience teaching students of all ages and abilities, from very young to very old and everywhere in between.  I began teaching friends whilst at college and became a professional teacher when I was 21. I currently teach guitar privately in Great Moor & Hawk Green, Marple, Stockport. I’m an RGT@LCM registered tutor, fully DBS checked, and lessons can be as informal as you like, or you can also study for grades validated by London College of Music.

Experienced musician

I have years of live experience as the lead guitarist and singer/guitarist in more live venues  than I could remember, including festivals, clubs, pubs, theatres and even casinos! I’ve played live on the radio and national television, I’ve shared the main stage at outdoor festivals with famous recording artists including KT Tunstall and Gary Numan and I’m still an active songwriter, composer and music producer. I have much studio experience and have also had lots of radio play with both my last band and current production work.

Intuitive Teaching Ethic

The most important things about my guitar lessons are that they are tailored to suit you rather than me, and that I understand that everyone has a different way of learning. Everybody has some musical ability, and I have the patience, experience and insight to help you develop and realise your potential.

  • Learn to play what YOU want – any band, any style
  • Rock, Metal, Blues, Funk, Punk, Pop, Indie, Country, Folk etc etc
  • Study for grades 1-8 in Acoustic, Electric, Rock or just play for fun
  • Learn key skills to jam with others & play live
  • Learn to write/compose/arrange songs
  • Support in-between lessons via personalised tablature and
email contact for both students or parents

All Ages Welcome

I have taught students from 3 years old to 81 years old and I always have a massively varied age range of students. Pre school and infant-school children usually benefit most when their parents or guardians treat the lessons as an experience for all of them to share and enjoy. This can be a very rewarding, connective experience for all concerned. Click here to read more on my teaching ethic regarding children.

Many people worry that they’re too old to learn, or lose confidence because they feel they won’t be as good as I expect them to be!  Forget those ideas and come along. You’re never too old to learn and you’re rarely too young to learn!

Teaching Material

This varies widely from student to student and I particularly enjoy teaching varied styles. All students are trying to Jimi Hendriximprove their playing and for some, this means studying for grades, for others it means playing songs by bands they like. I strongly recommend students find music they like so that we can use that in the lessons, and I work happily with any material on the basis that if you like it, it’s good with me!

This means I can spend a teaching session going from chart pop songs, to shred metal, to Gretchen Mennblues solos, to fingerstyle arrangements of folk songs, to funky rhythm parts, to parody versions of songs, to graded rock or acoustic pieces, to improvising using modal scales! Whether studying for grades in acoustic, electric or rock guitar, or just strumming chords to your favourite songs, it’s all good with me. If you have no idea what you want to play, that’s no problem either, and that is something we can work out together.

Get Qualified With Graded Syllabuses Available To Study, Validated By London College Of Music

As a member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors at London College of Music (RGT@LCM), I teach grades in Acoustic, Electric and Rock guitar. This means students buy a handbook for the relevant grade, which I provide, and learn material from it until they are ready to take an exam which they are then entered for. Once they pass, students receive a certificate with their name on to say they are of that grade standard. They can then feel very pleased with themselves! The exams are validated by London College of Music, and from Grade 6 upwards contribute to UCAS points.
